Induced Motion of Polymer Chains on Surfaces

Molecular manufacturing will require the movement of raw material (consisting of small numbers of molecules) to be transported in a controlled way between work zones. In order to accomplish this, Drexler, has proposed a conveyer belt arrangement. In this work, we propose other methods to create directional motion on a molecular surface and present simulation results. In one method, a laser field is used to excite a vibrational mode which then causes the molecule to move across the surface. In the other method, the current from a nearby STM tip (which is modelled as a fixed charge) interacts with a localized charge (for example, a charged substituent). This interaction effectively lowers the barrier to surface transport
