Molecular Electronics and Chemical/Biological Sensors1

This talk will present mainly experimental effort of NASA Ames Center for Nanotechnology in research and development of molecular electronics and chemical/biological sensors. Organic molecular wires and carbon nanotubes have been synthesized using combinatorial approaches, and characterized with atomic force microscopes and Raman spectroscopy. They are fabricated into two and three terminal electronic devices, behaved like diodes and transistors. Furthermore, logic gates are made using p- and n-doped nanotube transistors, showing well-defined inverter behavior. Nanotube transistors and organic molecular wires also show ultra sensitivity to chemical and biological environment. Their application to nanoscale chemical/biological sensors is also discussed in this presentation.
