This is an abstract for a presentation given at the
Sixth Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology.
There will be a link from here to the full article when it is available on the web.

Carbon coatings are applied to hollow glass microspheres by the polycondensation at 450 C from the gaseous mixture of tetrachloromethane and methane. Apart from its scientific importance the present work is an attempt to solve some problems of medical practice, namely that of improving the properties of materials used in medical practice. Glass microspheres are used for examining blood microcirculation in different organs and tissues. But they possess low thromboresistance and besides, they are transparent, that makes their observation in bloodflow difficult. Carbon layers 110-700 Å thick on the surface of microspheres 50 microns in diameter, give a ten-fold increase in thromboresistance and allow an easy observation of their distribution in blood vessels. These microspheres were successfully used in the investigation of blood microcirculation in lungs. Applied coatings of carbon were investigated by the UV and vibrational spectroscopy.
