IV. Thiel Foundation’s 20Under20 to attend Foresight@Google

Foresight is proud to welcome The Thiel Foundation’s first group of 20Under20 Fellows to our 25th Anniversary Conference and celebratory Banquet.

“The Fellows are a tremendous group of young people who are going to advance the frontiers of knowledge, shake up staid industries, and change the world,” said [Peter] Thiel. “Tomorrow will not take care of itself. In order to solve vexing problems and increase the quality of life for people everywhere, the world’s economy needs continuous scientific and technical innovation from outstanding creative minds.”

As the first members of the 20 Under 20 Thiel Fellowship, the Fellows will pursue innovative scientific and technical projects, learn entrepreneurship, and begin to build the technology companies of tomorrow. During their two-year tenure, each Fellow will receive $100,000 from the Thiel Foundation as well as mentorship from the Foundation’s network of tech entrepreneurs and innovators. The project areas for this class of fellows include biotech, career development, economics and finance, education, energy, information technology, mobility, robotics, and space.

“The Fellows’ creativity, intelligence, and leadership were captivating,” said James O’Neill, the head of the Thiel Foundation. “They’re challenging the authority of the present and the familiar…. We’re excited to be working with them, and we hope they will help young people everywhere realize that you don’t need credentials to launch a company that disrupts the status quo.”

We are honored that The Thiel Foundation has chosen our conference to help kick off the Fellows’ experience. Come help us expand on the promise in emerging nanotech with the next generation of great innovators and entrepreneurs!

Midnight tonight Pacific time is the deadline for the early registration rate on Foresight@Google, our 25th Anniversary Conference and Celebration.

Check it out here: http://foresight.org/reunion

Past participants have said:

“This is mind candy for my soul. Having attended for two years now, this event stands alone in my mind as an opportunity to explore new horizons, challenge assumptions, and turbocharge a pursuit of lifetime learning. Too few people are brave enough to ask what could be—what could go right, how can we create our future…Those people are here!” —Steve Jurvetson, VC

“This is arguably the leading organization that truly combines scientific thinking and engineering thinking.” —Aubrey de Grey

“Foresight Institute is the premiere organization projecting the societal impacts of technologies which will remake the human experience” —Brad Sherman, Congressman

“Terrific experience for one of the unenlightened! Can’t imagine a more delightful introduction to the world of nanotechnology…Thanks for including me.” —Suzanne Kelly

“Definitely the best conference in this genre that I’ve been to… I was totally impressed.” —Luke Nosek, Paypal co-founder

“Had a great time and was exposed to fascinating ideas — and, more importantly — fascinating sources of ideas.” —Vernor Vinge

“One of the best times I’ve had at a conference, ever! Looking forward to the next one!” —Charles Vollum

Senior Associates: see also the Saturday night banquet. Non-Senior Associates: join now to qualify for attending the banquet.

Hope to see you there! –Chris Peterson

The bandwidth coming out of the Sheraton is marginal, so the video will be low-res, but we will be posting high-res videos later, funds permitting (feel free to assist with this goal!).

Unfortunately the Senior Associate Reception debate between Robin Hanson and Mencius Moldbug on futarchy will not be webcast.

You can also follow the conference on Twitter at #Foresight2010, and try sending in your questions in real time to the speakers that way.

Wish you all could be here with us this weekend! —Chris Peterson

Longtime readers know that we at Foresight would prefer that our members, and Nanodot readers in general, actually live long enough to experience the benefits of molecular nanotechnology personally. In that vein, we bring to your attention America’s Wellness Challenge, which I am helping as a member of their Social Media Advisory Board.

If you are new to the idea of extending healthy lifespan, try taking their quiz called My Wellness Challenge. If you are more experienced, take the quiz and post your suggestions for improvement as comments here, so I can pass them along to the organizers.

In any case, have a healthy and happy 2010! And we hope to see you Jan. 16-17 at the Foresight Conference and Senior Associate Reception in Palo Alto. —Chris Peterson

Nanotechnology Enables Real Atomic Precision is the title of a piece by Susan Smith in Desktop Engineering, which includes comments by longtime Foresight Senior Associates Steve Vetter and Tihamer Toth-Fejel:

While nanotechology might mean different things to different people, the term was originally coined to describe the building of things from the bottom up with atomic precision. That, says Steve Vetter, CEO of Molecular Manufacturing Enterprises of Saint Paul, MN, means “a place for every atom and every atom in its place.”

It covers both bottom-up and top-down approaches and closes:

Many different nanotechnologies are converging on the same basic concept—to control not just trillions, but kilogram quantities of atoms—and make them atomically precise.

Today’s Pioneering Nanotechnology Companies:
The Race for a Trillion Dollar Market
A popular feature of SME’s annual NanoManufacturing Conference, now brought to you as a webinar!

October 8, 2008
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. EDT

We can now buy over 800 products that incorporate nanotechnology, and that number will undoubtedly grow by the time this presentation is given. The U.S. government’s National Science Foundation estimates that within a decade, the total market impacts of nanotechnology will reach a trillion dollars. This market includes nanostructured materials ($340 billion), semiconductors and integrated circuits ($300 billion), pharmaceuticals ($180 billion), nanostructured catalysts ($100 billion) and nanotechnology-enabled aerospace products ($70 billion). But NSF did not even consider the cosmetics, agriculture, textiles, non-aerospace defense, and non-pharma medical. So their projections may be much to low–by a factor of two and a half (according to Lux Research).

When competing for survival, traditional manufacturing businesses will be wiped out by companies making superior nano-enabled products. This presentation will introduce 20 success stories of diverse companies that are nanotechnology pioneers—including some of the companies behind the $2.6 Trillion prediction. Undoubtedly some of these pioneers will become partners and suppliers to traditional manufacturers—perhaps yours?

Presented by Tihamer “Tee” Toth-Fejel

Tee is a senior research engineer, in the Innovative Intelligence Group of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems. Toth-Fejel has almost two decades of experience in advanced engineering development, from specification and design to implementation and analysis. He is experienced in writing proposals, and designing and implementing complex software for GUI, decision support and DB applications. Toth-Fejel has a BS in electrical engineering from Lehigh University and an MS in electrical engineering from University of Notre Dame.

Our favorite nanotechnology VC is Steve Jurvetson, who is interviewed over at LiveMint.com from India, which is affiliated with The Wall Street Journal. An excerpt:

How are the elements of the nanotech start-up ecosystem different from other sectors?

First, it is hard to find human talent because a lot of the really interesting breakthroughs happen in interdisciplinary areas, such as biology and electronics, for example. So you need people who are either skilled in both or have experience in one but are willing to learn (the other).

For example, Zettacore, one of our investments, is a nanotechnology company focused on semiconductors, but it is also based on principles of organic chemistry, which perhaps has things in common with a bio or life sciences company.

Second, the challenge is what product you ship. If you fundamentally innovate at an atomic level, you might need an entire industry to be built around it, so that the physical world interfaces with the nano world.

Steve mentions the conference at which he first became interested in nanotech:

In 1998-99, a friend invited me to a nanotech conference where people brainstormed about (technologies of) the future. It was one of the most intellectually stimulating conversations I’d had.

That was the spring 1999 Foresight Senior Associate Gathering. If you join Foresight as a Senior Associate, you’ll be invited to our next one! —Christine
