Translation : (excuse my weak French, but it's more comprehensible than the machine, I think)

Grenoble, mother of all the technopoles [loosely translated = "centres of innovation"], Silicon Valley of France ... The writings of public opinion and the economic lobby are unanimous : - the development of your town obviously centres around the infamous Military-Industrial Complex, micro- and nano- technologies, the Atomic Energy Commission, and their start-ups.

[From Nanodot editor: Here is a machine translation: Grenoble, “mother of all the technopoles”, “Silicon Valley to the Frenchwoman”… The manuscripts of the authorities and economical lobbies are unanimous: the development of our city gravitates obviously around the fine liaison Research-Army one-Industry, microphones and nanotechnologies, CEA (Commissionership to the Atomic energy) and of its start-ups …]

I agree, the sources may be biased.

I did hear the 1000 number from someone I met with at the British Consulate here. However, that person's source may be the same as the ones I found, so who knows...

Maybe someone who knows French can look on some French newspaper websites.

Thanks for writing! —Christine

I'm fascinated, but I am worried about the sources. news.google.com does not have anything. That leaves three sources: Earth First (your main link), the site of one of the protest groups (ouvaton.org), and a group called Indymedia. Indymedia itself does not appear to be a real news site; one of its "articles" is a sort of "10 myths about why nanotechnology should be allowed".

Thank you very much for the tip, but now I am worrying about the accuracy. Maybe it is just a protest group trumping itself up, and a couple of other sites passing on the "news" that they feed them?

Anyway, I sure love their name. It's not nanotech, it's "necrotech"!
