I do agree with Foresight's advocacy of openness in nanotechnology research.

However at some point the market is going to become a major player in this research. Are all private companies going to agree to open their proprietary nanotech blueprints to the world in the name of safety?

Or is it going to be just like the software/computer industry–open source (FreeBSD, Linux, perl, TCP/IP, etc.) in parts and proprietary (Microsoft, Sun, Apple, etc.) in others?

And if it turns out to be a hybrid of the two, isn't there the possibility of a monopoly arising, a "Microsoft/Ma Bell of nano" if you will, that creates a large monoculture of technology that is prone to worms, trojans and viruses?
