Cryonics under fire in France

from the cold,-cold-world dept.
Anonymous Coward writes "The BBC is carrying a story about a couple in France whose frozen bodies may be thawed by local authorities. Cyronics have been outlawed there, and the official position is that burial or cremation are the only acceptable fates for the dead. The couple in question were apparently wealthy enough to have set up the necessary equipment on their own property, but even this does not guarantee their post-mortem privacy. While there are not too many details, it would appear that the husband placed his wife in a freezer in 1984 after she died of cancer, and he himself was placed in the freezer by his son when he recently died."

    Does anybody know…

…what other countries have effectively forbidden cyronics? In particular, has Switzerland done it? (A Google search appears to reveal nothing)

    And so it begins….

…outlawed, but couldn't you argue about personal burial rights? Or are there temperature regulations for burials? This is nuts

Ok…. aside from my own personal interest in cryonics…

Is anyone else morally disgusted by this? Someone makes plans for themselves…. and some other party can come in and mess with it after they're dead? Apparently without probate?

I'm not even sure I can explain my problem with this… I'm just…. well… nauseated.

    Burial Rites

Freedom of religion should allow anyone to be buried however they choose…I believe the next time we have a census come around, we should write in the other box for religion: Christian Transhumanist or Jewish Transhumanist, or Athiest Trans…you get the point…therefore this becomes burial rites and falls into religion Which therefore allows burials as the religion dictates…part of which is the option of cryonics.
    This is stupid!

    Re:Burial Rites

Nevermind all the bad stuff that's going to happen to the earth if we continue to saturate with our dead in our eno-superstitious rituals, but I'd like to think that when I die, nobody's going to mess with me. I'd also like to have the option of freezing myself before death, so that whatever disease I may be dying of can be cured before I really do go. (My grandmother on one side and grandfather on the other both died of leaky heart valves in 1939 and 59, respectively. Imagine if they could have been frozen and brought back in the 70s or 80s when the medical science to fix a leaky heart valve became commonplace… especially my grandmother, who was like 30 when she died) OK, so I don't know much about cryonics specifically, but I do know that since we're all too stupid to think for ourselves, we need the government to tell us what we should wear in our cars, bikes, and homes; we need to be told what to watch, what classes we should take to get through just everyday life, what's good and bad for us, and how we should think. (I hope you can all hear the sarcasm) I mean, CLEARLY the French have realized that letting the populace do its own thinking and make its own decisions, so we need to get on the ball, guys!
