Nanotechnology is being used to fight the Avian Bird Flu. Have you seen the NanoMask? Also, I’ve heard of a nanogel that can be used to clean hands.
I like Walter’s idea of knocking down NS1. Perhaps what’s holding it back is the lack of sufficient in vivo data to prove safety and efficacy? Also, it may have something to do with the big pharma companies…

Virologists have know for at least a decade that respiratory viruses produce a binding protein called NS1 that disables a host cell’s genetic machinery allowing the virus to take over –rapidly replicating itself and spreading to neighboring cells. The virus harnesses this NS1 protein, to block the body’s own antiviral response, which would normally kill the virus before it could gain a foothold.
Recently US researchers have demonstrated proof-of-concept of a novel antiviral treatment in both animal models and in human lung cells in the lab.
Combining smart nanoparticles and a hot new medical technology, called small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology, scientists silenced the gene that produces NS1 proteins .in the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) — a virus associated with severe bronchitis and asthma.
Influenza A also produces the SN1 protein.
So I don’t understand why scientists aren’t promoting the use of siRNA Nanotechnology to combat the bird flu?
