Hotmail founder to build Nano City in India

Edward Iwata of USA Today reports that Hotmail founder Sabeer Bhatia has ambitious plans for India:

The most ambitious project may be “Nano City,” a $10 billion, environmentally sustainable development unveiled in April by entrepreneur Bhatia and the Haryana state government in northern India. Modeled after Silicon Valley, Nano City will feature R&D and educational centers and corporate offices for technology, biosciences and other “knowledge industries.”

“My goal is to build a model city of the future for the whole world,” says Bhatia, who hopes Nano City will be completed in 10 years.

This sounds excellent, but it also doesn’t sound closely focused on nanotech per se. From another story on Nano City:

Mr Chaudhary said that the State Government expected this city to cover technologies such as Nano Technology, Bio Sciences, Software Product Development, Next Generation Internet Products, Materials Research and Energy.

Further clarification on this point, this time from Mr. Bhatia in Red Herring:

The term ‘nano’ is used to represent all technologies of the future and does not restrict this city to development of nanotechnology-based technologies.

Although we at Foresight would prefer the project to focus more tightly on nanotech, especially atomically-precise manufacturing, we wish excellent success to Nano City. —Christine

    Dear Sabeer Bhatia,

    It is a great news that Sabeer Bhatia and Haryana Govt. has planned to develope a Nano city in northern India at an expenditure of $10 billion. I read the same kind of news on 20th July, 2006 that the Haryana government is working actively to set up a nanotechnology city in Punchkula to promote “future technologies” in the state.

    Wish you all the best and best success in this project. We, in Govt. Of India , Ministary of Communications and Information Technology, Department of Information Technology are also promoting Nanotechnology by granting Projects in this area specially to develope nanoelectronics in the country.

    This is idiotic. There are only two main things that need to be focused on: an MNT Assembler (NOT Nano-Factories!!), and devices which tap into the Zero-Point Energy Field to power all of this technology. Once these two things are completed, ANYTHING which is envisioned will be possible.

    How can this new city be modeled after Silicon Valley if it is created in such a non-organic way?

    I think the key to creating innovative cities is arranging the right resources and incentives. Silicon Valley has an overlap of great climate and natural resources and great educational resources. More importantly, you need a legal system and culture that both rewards the creation of intellectual property and provides the freedom to innovate and build businesses.

    Climate and natural resources might determine where an innovative community arises within a particular country, but the legal system and culture determine whether it arises at all. The smartest among us create these places and they seem to know how to cross borders.

    No, it was not meant for another post. I posted specifically to this thread, though it applies to many other threads, as well. The Assembler should be researched and built, first and foremost, and then all other technolgies, such as anti-aging, genetic engineering etc, can come after that.

    Most people fail to realize just how important the Assembler is…more importantly, people fail to understand how important the power source that will drive such a device is. The Assembler, powered by Zero-Point Energy, will advance the human race technologically by THOUSANDS of years. With this technology, we will make the transition, very quickly, from a Dyson Class I civilization, to a Class III civilization; after that, we will make another very smooth transition to a Class IV civilization, sometime after the Singularity. Whether or not this technology gives us a Class V civilization remains to be seen, but I will assume so — given we don’t destroy ourselves before then.

    Concepts such as Nano cities are just plain ridiculous – especially at this point in time. If anything, such ideas are only there to desensitize the public, making the transition to a nano-society that much easier. If desensitization is the goal, however, there are far better ideas.

    I agree with Anonymous that concepts such as ‘Nano cities’ sound silly.
    What’s the idea of a city, after all ? It’s for living, isn’t it ?
    It’s for human beings !
    I think two things got mixed up here : the idea of a city and the idea of a modern or future factory.
    Why try to force a city concept into a high-tech factory frame ?
    In a way, it’s unnatural, and it will harm the spiritual life of such a city’s inhabitants. And when I say ‘spiritual life’, I don’t just mean something imaginary or theoretical : it’s something which permeates the entire life of a human being, his personality included.

    Nanotechnology itself, in my opinion, is still subject to scrutiny. Its idea was launched as far as I know in the 1960′s by a famous somewhat maverick physicist named Richard Feynman. Scientifically and technologically the idea seemed and seems a good one, the more so as it was presented by such a brilliant man, but its real-life adequacy for mankind should never be taken for granted, and should rather always be questioned, as long as mankind’s spiritual development (you could call it ‘consciousness’) does not guarantee the adequacy of its technological and scientific developments.

    The idea is wonderful. But most of us donot know even how the concept of nano tech works.
    I am on the lookout for a syllabus on nanotech to organise proper education in this sector. I am not able to get full information. Any similarly interested person can discuss with me on the subject.
    I am of the opinion, that we should prepare the infrastructure and necessary grounds in this direction, before embarking on large scale investments.
    can anyone help me in finding an appropriate syllabus and lab facilities to begin with the studies of nanotech?

    the idea is excellent. it simply means that one starts from scratch and allows a city to grow in a planned way and the community in the city has a focus on knowledge and related industries.

    well, as per my market reserach in india it would really be challenging to create such a facility due to the huge requirement of the infrastructure. The present spending for nanotechnology is estimated to be $5 million which leaves a lot of gap to be filled.     I think some of you have got wrong thread in your brain about so called “NanoCity”. The city basically here gives the idea that it will be a technological hub of India where there will be manufacturing, R&D, education, life sciences, electronics utilizing fundamentals of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

    And I would stress that R&D in this field is the key to exponential progress of humankind.
