How a molecular nanotechnology bearing will actually move

Will Ware, whom you may remember from NanoCAD, has done the most accurate simulation and animation of a molecular bearing design to date. He explains:

Using NanoEngineer-1 (see http://www.nanoengineer-1.com) and other open-source software, I have created an animated simulation of the molecular bearing design on page 298 of Nanosystems by Eric Drexler. I worked with Dr. Drexler over several weeks to ensure that the video is behaviorally accurate and clarifies some points of confusion that he has encountered in another molecular animations.

The 82-megabyte full resolution MPEG-4 file is available at:

This is pretty technical stuff, but even the less-technical among us may enjoy the video. The most interesting part is toward the end. Well done, Will. —Christine
