New: Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

from the nanopublishing-heating-up dept.
The new quarterly Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology has published its first issue. Cost is $149 for individuals, $575 for institutions. Editor is H.S. Nalwa (formerly of Hitachi), Editor of the Handbook of Nanostructured Materials and Nanotechnology. Editorial board includes some familiar big names: H. Craighead, Cornell; J. Gimzewski, IBM; C. Lieber, Harvard; M. Reed, Yale; A. Requicha, USC; N. Seeman, NYU; U. Sleytr, Austria; H.I. Smith, MIT; D. Srivastava, NASA. Looks like direct competition for the journal Nanotechnology published by IOP in the UK, and indirect competition for ACS's new Nano Letters.

    Publishers must adapt or perish

I've sent the publisher a very pointed note about the issue of open access to "aged" journal articles and whether or not they intend to support the trends towards free information access. The current publication system does not accelerate development paths and should be discarded with all possible speed.

Peer review and reputation ranking can be done much better using current computer-based methods. (Slashdot and Nanodot are both examples of this.) The out-dated scientific publishing system approaches need to be migrated into the current era where scientists have ranking requests fed to them as well as open access to their progress on pending ranking requests.

I will post responses to this message from the publisher if to respond.

Jeez, at this price it had better be good

Sorry, but journal prices are ridiculous. Especially now that publishing is cheaper, and given that most of them get loads of free work. I'm quite interested in the topic, but at these prices I won't subscribe, and I'd hesitate to ask my institution to do so.
