bioMEMs, capsules cure diabetes in Rats

Brian Wang writes "Pre-cursors of the nanotech medical cures are being tested in rats. Mem capsules with 7 nm holes let out insulin from cells inside the capsule. The holes allow nutrients in to keep the cells alive but keep out the immune system cells to keep the cells alive. Since the cells and the capsules last basically the lifetime of the person, they are effectively a cure. They will take some years to go through long term small animal trials and then to monkey and finally to human trials. The technique can be applied to other diseases. Parkisons, hemofilia etc… http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,47934, 00.html"

Additional information about the device can found in this NSF press release.

    Nanomachines

Instead of MEM/NEM pills, when will we see the technology evolve to the point where actual nanomachines travel the bloodstream and act not only as a secondary immune system, but also stops the affects of aging? Will we see physical immortality in our lifetime? I hope I get to see it – or perhaps even contribute to the research to make it happen.

    Kudos

I am pleased to see this article…My mother has just been diagnosed with Diabeties type 2 and I guess I could be at high risk for it.
This article should get her out of her sulk.

I wonder when foresight will announce that nanodot.org is back online to the e-mail newsletter readers…I know I gave up for awhile checking back on here when it went down for a long time.

They are stumbling around trying to figure out how the wings should be attached to the first airplane and your wondering when the stealth bomber is gonna come out

Until then, you will never be satisfied…

Kadamose: Take a moment and marvel at what is going on now…look at the wings and see how that effects right now verses get annoyed at what possibly may never come…allow yourself to not have such a distant view.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but the work they're talking about is basically applicable only to type I diabetes. It's about implanting islet cells and keeping them from being destroyed by the immune system.

Type II diabetics have (generally) a full complement of islet cells, but are resistant to the insulin those cells secrete.
