Nanotechnology Think Tank
in The Netherlands

Arthur ten Wolde*

This is an abstract for a poster to be presented at the
Fifth Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology.

The Netherlands Study Center for Technology Trends (STT) has started a two-year constructive technology assessment of Nanotechnology in the fall of 1996. The subject is a logical continuation of our Microsystem technology study that was concluded in 1994. The project organization consists of a steering committee (chairman: David N. Reinhoudt, Laboratory for Supramolecular Chemistry at the University of Twente), an international advisory board (including George Whitesides) and four task forces: Molecular nanotechnology, Nanoparticles and nanostructured (hybrid) materials, Top-down nanotechnology and Nanoprobes.

Together, about 60 experts from university and industry with backgrounds in biology, chemistry and physics form an impressive multidisciplinary think tank. After a series of meetings - network formation! - each task force will write a chapter of 40-50 pages for a book of about 250 pages, on the technology, market opportunities and societal needs such as sustainability and health. STT aims at a research, development and demonstration agenda for the industry, government and universities. The outcomes will be presented on a seminar in 1998.
